Why am I prone to roommate envy? An in-depth look at the roots of the need to be strong mentality

My roommates are particularly outstanding; they are warm, pretty, generous, and very good at dressing themselves, and they are exceptionally well-liked. Sometimes, I would unconsciously become jealous, which made me feel a little bit struggling in interpersonal interactions.

I often reflect on whether I am too pushy, always wanting to be better than everyone else at everything, and worrying that I will fall behind as soon as I see someone else ahead.

Hello friend, I am glad to answer your question. I am counselor and listener Xiao Wei.

You mentioned having jealousy towards your roommate, but to me, it actually reflects your desire and quest for a better life.

The fact that you notice so much good in your roommate shows that you have the ability to find beauty.

The fact that you occasionally feel jealous just shows that you too aspire to be as good as they are.

With that said, I'd like to share my understanding of jealousy and hopefully give you a new perspective.

I think jealousy comes from the imbalance of wanting something and not being able to have it at the moment, but the "wanting" itself represents your recognition of the good, which is the positive side of jealousy.

When we realize this, jealousy tends to diminish and turn into appreciation and learning.

If you want to destroy something because you can't have it, like "If I don't have it, you can't have it," that's true jealousy.

In fact, a moderate amount of jealousy can be a motivator for us to progress and help with self-improvement.

From your description, I'm guessing that your jealousy probably falls within the moderate range.

As for "wanting to be better than everyone else and being afraid of falling behind", there may be a sense of deprivation behind this, perhaps related to certain experiences in growing up, which would require a deeper understanding in order to provide concrete help.

The above is my answer, I hope to inspire you. I am Xiaowei, welcome to follow me oh.

All the best to you, the world and I love you, my dear.
