I've been working for a firm in Shanghai for five years, which requires a lot of traveling, and I have a family now.
Recently, there was a job opportunity in Hefei where I can work from home half of the week, and I'm debating whether to go for it or not. I've already passed one round of video interviews, and the headhunter is urging me to go to Hefei for an on-site interview, but thinking about the fact that I'm out on the road half the year now, and I'm rarely at home, I'm pretty torn, and I don't know if I should turn it down or not.
The main point that has me stumped is that this job is based in Hefei, and it's fixed to travel half of the year.
Although I was able to work from home for half a day a week, when I think about it, it was still a business-oriented job. Now that I have a family, traveling too much is really not good for my life.
Analyzing it, what attracts me most to this job is the convenience of working from home for that half week. However, having already interviewed for one round, the headhunter is now asking for an on-site interview in Hefei, and I'm a bit backed up in my mind. Thinking about changing social security and moving to an unfamiliar second-tier city, I really don't know what to choose.
Should we go or not?
If you look at the working mechanism alone, I think it may not be too cost-effective. Hefei is a second-tier city, but compared to Shanghai, the gap is still quite obvious, especially in terms of networking resources and various opportunities, there is really a fundamental difference between first-tier and second-tier cities, so this point is not very attractive.
You're married and wondering what your wife has to say or suggest? We can talk about the following areas:

1. Where do you intend to settle in the future and how will the education of your children be coordinated?
If you and your wife plan to settle down in a first-tier city and have a clear plan, then you can try to communicate with your company to see if you can reduce the frequency of business trips. At the same time, also take a look at the market situation and use your own contacts to find better opportunities.
The hardest thing about staying in a first-tier city is the house, household registration and children's education issues, if these can be solved, the first-tier city is definitely a better environment to grow up in. But if the strength is not enough, it is also good to take a step back and choose a new first-tier city, such as Hangzhou, Chengdu, Nanjing and other places that are developing fast, the prospect is quite good, you can discuss with your wife together.
2. Once the goals are set, some specific plans can be made.
You didn't have too many worries before when you were on your own, but now that you have a family and children in the future, you can prepare in advance. Be decisive when it's time to be decisive, such as the current situation, you can make a list of things to worry about and discuss them with your wife to find a balance that is acceptable to both parties.
Working from home is indeed enviable, but you know that the efficiency may not be as high as in the company, so you should not only look at the immediate benefits, but also analyze the situation to find the most suitable way to live and work.
